Rift valley Province : The Great Rift Valley

So called because the Great Rift Valley's escarpments, trough and other unprecedented seismic features are best viewed in Kenya. The Rift Valley is a place of breathtaking spectacles.
Formed 20 million years ago, when the earth’s crust erupted, the Rift Valley is thousands of kilometers long and goes far beyond Kenya stretching from the middle east to Malawi in Southern Africa.
This is the home of colourful, pastoral peoples, the Maasai and Samburu among others, and is the nation’s breadbasket. The Rift Valley is also home to well over 90% of Kenya's world-renowned great long-distance runners.  In recognition of such talent in the region, St Patrick Iten, a well-known school in this country, is dedicated to training athletes and has produced some of world’s crème de al crème of long distance running.

The province is dotted with volcanic lakes such as Naivasha, Baringo and Nakuru, home to the largest concentration of flamingoes worldwide. The biggest concentration of geysers in Kenya, some of which have been harnessed to produce geo-thermal power, is in the Rift Valley, also known for large-scale grain farming.

The Rift Valley is the domicile of the rare Sitatunga in the Mau area, the water tower that feeds into the great Nile.  The region is also home to the spectacular Maasai Mara that has showcased, since time immemorial, the incredible Great Migration of the wildebeest recently identified as the world's Eighth Wonder.
